Receiving error on .doc files when double-clicking to open

Am using Word and Office 97. I'm receiving an error stating that the file is
not a valid Win32 Application.
I have ensured that Word is the default program for opening .doc files.

Try recreating the file associations first since it only occurs when
you open a file outside the application. Go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
