Receiving Multiple Emails

A few days ago one of our systems stated receiving
multiple copies (4) of every mail coming into that users
inbox. Win2k / Outlook 2002.

Mail is being hosted by webhost and all other users are
not having this problem. And it appears Outlook is not
removing the msg from the server after downloading it
(and, no, the client is not set to keep the msg on the
server).

Running Peer-to-peer network with broadband router.

Things that changed just prior to this happening:
- Turned off the DHCP server in the router and assigned
static IP's all around;
- Uninstalled Norton Anti-Virus from problem PC.

Several things can cause this. 1) Send/Receive interval is too small. 2)
Server timeout value is too small. 3) Rules that move messages don't
contain the "stop processing more rules" action.

removing the msg from the server after downloading it
(and, no, the client is not set to keep the msg on the

This is unlikely to be the cause because even when the client leaves
messages on the server, it remembers what it has downloaded and won't
download it again.

Outlook is in fact leaving the msg on the server... If I
use webmail into the account the message is still there. If
switch over to Outlook and send/receive, it will download
again. Back to webmail access and delete the message, then
back to Outlook a send/receive no longer downloads the
message (because it no longer resides on the server).

One more vague clue... after I got rid of DHCP, the first
time I opened Outlook, the dialog box that comes up on a
brand new account popped up (the one asking about
account/server type "Exchange" or other) I can't remember
exactly what I did or how to get back there. After clearing
the dialog, the inbox/account appeared as usual but now
this - I can send and receive 10-20 times and the message
is downloaded everytime. It's as if some external force is
holding the msg on the server.

The user's Outlook on the problem machine simply IS NOT
deleting the message from the server after downloading it.
Send receive interval is 3 minutes, Server timeout is 1
minute (as it has always been) and there are NO rules. If
the user goes to another machine, logs in and opens
Outlook, a single test message is received and immediately
deleted from the server.

Problem account was deleted and rebuilt - did not fix.

Outlook is in fact leaving the msg on the server...

I never claimed otherwise. What I said was that it didn't matter. Even if
you have Outlook leave messages on the server, it should remember what it
has downloaded and not download it again.
If I
use webmail into the account the message is still there. If
switch over to Outlook and send/receive, it will download
again. Back to webmail access and delete the message, then
back to Outlook a send/receive no longer downloads the
message (because it no longer resides on the server).

Then there's something going on in the POP protocol, since Outlook is
supposed to query the server for what messages it contains and build a UIDL
list with numbers for each message, using those numbers to decide what it
has downloaded and what is new.

If I were you, I'd create a new mail profile, point it at your existing PST,
and recreate the email account from scratch.

Thanks for the input. I went to the Office update site and
found critical update S.R.-1 (I think that's what it was
called). Installed it and problem went away. I still wonder
just what happened to Outlook to cause that to happen?
