'recent files' is locked out on WordXP, blanked in 'options'

I installed Windows XP, and then installed WORD XP. I noticed that there is
no recent file list. I went to 'options' and the General Tab, but the recent
file list option was greyed out and inoperable. I tried using the repair
feature under 'Help' but that didn't fix it. How can I get the recent file
list to work?

If this is a fresh install, there won't be a MRU list until you have opened
and edited and saved some documents.
Check in Tools, Options, General Tab that the MRU isn't set to zero.
Note that the MRU list isn't dynamic: you have to switch the TaskPane to
some other selection and back again before it updates.

This usually results from settings in TweakUI or some other similar utility.
If you block the MRU list on the Windows Start menu, this affects Word as
well.
