Recent update caused duplicate entries of Word.

Dear list members:

I have just run Microsoft's AutoUpdate utility and updated my installation
of Office 2004.

The problem I experienced was that after performing the update the windows
remained opened pointing to the same current update as being necessary. I
tried it again and after performing the same update the second time the
window still pointed to the same update being necessary.

I believe this might have happened as I have two internal drives in my
PowerMac G5 and as I update the primary internal drive, the software
probably detects the presence of an installation of Office in the second
internal drive and points to the need to update it (the second drive is a
duplicate of the primary internal one that I created periodically as part of
my back-up strategy). Could this be the problem ?

Another problem is the fact that now when I right-click the mouse to choose
what program I want to open a file with, the menu window that opens has two
instead of one entry for Word and they don't have the same name. The entries
also have different next to them contained within parentheses (version
number?). I transferred a Word .doc from my Powerbook to the PowerMac and
the document showed on the desktop as a blank page. Only after I used the
get info command to change from one version of Word to another the icon
changed to the typical Word document icon.

What is causing this and how did this happen ? How can this be changed to
that I can restore my system to the single Word entry ?

Thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,

Joseph

Hi Joseph,

Sorry you had to post a second time. I didn't reply to the first post
because I have no experience with dual drives. However, did you repair disk
permissions using Disk Utility after the update? It's a good idea to
run it always after installing or uninstalling software. It *might* help.

As for the other problem, I think it must be tied to the first. And since
there are two versions of Word that appear, I suspect that you had a faulty
update. If repairing disk permissions didn't clear things up, I suggest you
do a complete removal and reinstallation of Office 2004.

This time, just in case, don't use the AutoUpdate utility at first. After
reinstalling Office from the CD, go to
<http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.aspx#Office2004>. Download and
install these updaters in order:

1. Microsoft Office 2004 for Mac Service Pack 2
2. Office 2004 for Mac 11.2.1 Update

*Then* run the MS AutoUpdate tool and pick up any other updaters you want
and may have missed.

Also, to be sure you do the removal properly, use the Remove Office tool.
Full instructions are here:

(If using Safari, hit Refresh once or twice; better yet, use another
browser.)

Hope this helps.
