IE 7 downloaded well, since then, everytime I open outlook 2003, it opens
then automatically 'synch folders' whether on or offline, and not with any
pda etc attached. Explorer not open but think its probably dialoguing with
IE? it gets to 25% synching and then shuts itself down. Cannot get to tools
bar etc on outlook, it won't allow anything else to happen while it synchs,
after 1 min, it doesn't 'go anywhere' and tries to send an error mess to
microsoft, i get to select yes or no, then it shuts down. Can't get it to
stay open. Thanks. got one message once - MSI.EXEC did not respond? or
something like that. Ps I have XP and laptop fairly new.

Go to Start, Control Panel, Mail. Turn off "Cached Exchange Mode" (uncheck)
in your e-mail account. Cached Exchange Mode downloads copies of your mail to
the Outlook.ost file so your e-mail is there if you are offline. If you are
at a desktop computer, you don't need or want that. It is useful for laptop
users (like you). I have Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook 2003. IE7 does not
turn this feature on. It is a default setting that you can turn off when you
configure the account. Try it turned off. If it works, you can try turning it
back on.

Hi Thanks for responding. Did as suggested, Mail gives 3 options:Set up, data
files, profiles. I went into all 3, no option to turn off cached exchange
mode. Went all thru e-mail acct searching for this option. I think your on
the right track. Went into data files, I note it refers to pst files, I went
into somewhere else - I note cptr registeres data files for both pst and ost
- i can't recall where i just went for that list, but could find it again if
need be. Anywhere else in control panel i might find that option for turning
off the cached exchange mode? Cheers

OOPS! I didn't have my thinking cap on straight this morning. BCM connects to
its database when you start Outlook. If the database is unavailable, you have
problems (because it can't synch your local copy). Where is your database? Is
it on your hard drive or on someone else' PC? If it is on someone else' PC,
they need to leave their PC on and connected to make it available to you? If
it's on your laptop, you shouldn't have to synch. Did the person who has the
the database take today off and shut down their PC?

Bob

Estelle,

Your question does not sound like a BCM problem. Do you have Business
Contact Manager installed on this machine?

If this is a generic Outlook question, you should repost it in
microsoft.public.outlook.

Many thanks folks - it is my own laptop. I don't think i installed business
contact manager (though i had the option to). I find my active sync pda and
the existing outlook facility did the job i needed to. I will do as you
suggest and am probably going to ring microsoft helpdesk, as only had 4 hours
sleep trying to sort this! Many thanks
