recipient list doesn't save

I have a merge set up but when I try to go and save the most recent recipient
list it gives me a read only error. The recipient list is a word document.
Didn't have this issue with 2003 version.

If you need to modify the recipient list, use File>Open to open it and make
the modifications before attaching it to the mail merge main document.

If I open up the word document it's not formatted in a way to just overlay
the new data. Basically there are columns of data. The top is the field
name and the date is below. Do I need to change the view somehow?
example:

loan # Bank name Date open
123 abc bank Nove
ber 23,
2004

I am not sure what you mean by "just overlay the new data". However the
format that you describe is what I would expect and it is almost certainly a
table and if you select Show Gridlines from the Tables menu, you will see
the row and column outlines. If you want to add new data, locate the cursor
in the last cell of the last row of the table and press the Tab key. That
will add a new row to the table into which you can enter the data.

We were able to do this but why can't we delete the old source data in the
main document and and input the new merge data and then be able to save it?

I'm guessing here, but is your data source file located on a network? If
so, there is definitely a problem with trying to edit it through Word's
Mailmerge facilities because Word now seems to make a copy on the local
hard disk, but then fails to copy the modifications back to the original.

If that's the problem, all I can tell you is that you are not alone. I
don't know why this problem exists or whether or not there is any
intention of fixing it (or, for that matter, whether it still occurs in
the latest SP2 version of Word 2007).
