Recommended location for future proof contact lists and calendars?

Apologies for the cross post.

I have an increasing number of user with Windows Mobile 5 devices
using the AUTD (Always Up To Date) features available in Exchange SP2.
These use GPRS, Edge or whatever rather than wireless protocols to
keep in touch. To updating is completely automatic.

Since these devices have small displays it is important to limit the
amount of information downloaded to them.

I have been taking Contacts out of the Public Folder environment, and
putting the into AD; using a filter to produce a customized Offline
Address book for each mobile user, containing only "their" contacts,
and having this synchronize automatically whether the user is in the
office or not.

This also seems a good idea since we hear Public Folders are being
discontinued in future Exchange versions.

However I also see recommendations that we move our Contacts to WSS
(Sharepoint Portal) as they are a shared resource.

Can anyone throw and light on the issue. Will Sharepoint portal or WSS
support AUTD over mobile phone networks so I can update contacts,
calendars and other shared information? How will this integrate with
Exchange?

Or should I continue to use Exchange?

There are Betas for the next versions of Exchange and Shareportal . It might
be worth subscribing. Usually when subsribing to a Beta there are specific
newsgroups, these might be a possible source of information.

I don't know about the situation with the Exchange beta but the situation
with the SharePoint betas is that only people who were in the (earlier)
private betas of SharePoint 2007 have access to beta newsgroups. People who
download the recent public beta 2 do not have any access to the beta
newsgroups and need to post in one of the public sharepoint newsgroups
(where this is a certain amount of MVP support but no Microsoft support
unlike the situation with the beta newsgroups).
