Recommended menu system

I have built menus using interactive buttons and layers

but I find it tedious to keep all the layer code etc working correctly. If
you save a button it drops the hidden/visible layer code. There is probably
a better way. So far I have looked at Jim's Menus which I found on Dynamic
Drive but, before I invest learning time, I thought I would ask this group
for menu system suggestions. I usually like vertical menus with popouts but
sometimes horizontal menus might be nice.

Thanks,

The CSS menu system looks very nice but it appears that it will not work in
IE on Macs. Is this true and is it a problem?

I do not have access to a Mac, but the menu works in IE5.0 on Windows
98, and all browsers later than that in Windows.
According to stats. at http://www.thecounter.com Mac users account for
3% of the OS, and 2% of browsers are Mac/Safari. 2% of all browsers are
IE5.x (Windows and MAC combined). Your sites may vary - mine gets 1%
Mac, all using Safari, and no complaints.

The menu and pages can be designed to work with any browser - mine at
http://www.rxs-enterprises.org is functional (though not necessarily
working in the same way) with NN4, Lynx2.8, IE5.0 (Windows), Opera 7,
Firefox, Netscape 6 and later - design the top level choices to open
pages that have links to all the fly-out choices, thus providing
navigation for browsers where the flyout fails.
