record locking on main form and subform

i have a form / subform relationship for a particular application. i have set the advanced options to
make sure 'edit record' locking is used. the forms also have this option identified

if i have more than one user on the same record, i am definitely locked at the sub form level. i am not
locked at the form level. also i do not get any notification as to why i can not key

i checked this news group for any info on record locks and did not find this particular issue
also checked, forms programming and security.

so, is there a way i could display a pop up screen or a msgbox to let the user know what is happening
how do i also 'lock' the main form
