if your modem allows recording and you are using it for the call, yes. a
splitter and recording device might be better and will work for all calls.

Splitters vary a lot in quality, some do not have the correct isolation
between the phone and the pc that is needed, which is a transformer. Also,
lower cost ones only connect to the loudspeaker wires in the handset and so
might not pick up your own voice so well, depending upon your phone and the
line. Very sophistiated ones connect to both the microphone and loudspeaker
wires in your handset, and give perfectly balanced sound.

Have a look at

http://www.retellrecorders.co.uk/recording/machine/650.htm
and http://www.retellrecorders.co.uk/help/connectors.htm which seems to
explain the background a bit more.

Mine plugs in to a phone jack, just like a normal phone and records both
sides of the conversation - I think I paid about $25 for it at radio shack,
but that was years ago. Hmm... too bad OneNote wasn't around then - we got
it so I could record hubby's voice mail for him and clear the mailbox
because it filled up faster than he could check it. I first used it with a
cassette recorder but later hooked it to a PC so I could save some messages
to cd. (A former employee left threatening messages on voice mail before he
quit, then tried to get unemployment. The judge enjoyed the cd. <g>) If I
needed to record the messages now, I could record them into OneNote and add
typed notes to each segment. <g>

2 possible solutions: 1 warning:

#1: This may not be nearly the best solution, but:
Most Ericsson & SonyEricsson mobile phones have recording features. If you
are using a mobile phone you can just record the conversation directly on
the phone and them IR to the pc ( also works if you have bluetooth )

#2: If your modem IS be compaible: connect the phone line,, call some
randrom number,
on the laptop click Start - RUN - SNDVOL32
The volume control will open
click OPTIONS - PROPERTIES -> RECORDING -> SELECT PHONE
Click OK
RECORDING CONTROLL will open
Select PHONe, increase volume, try recording

## Warning ##
I am not a layer... BUT: Recording ANY phone conversation FOR ANY REASON
without first warning the other party MAY BE against Federal Wiretap Laws.
Play it safe !
Cheers, Achille
