Recover CD-key for office 2000 Premium

G

Gee38!

Hi had a look on the site by search but nothing appeared apologies im sure
i'm not the only one to post this querry.

I am tasked with recovering the office 2000 keys off of several units that
are to be upgraded, how to
I go about retrieving these. I have looked at several promising keyfinders
to no avail, several others online have suggested magical jellybean can
supports this..? but couldnt see an option from the latest version downloaded
to select an option for the office key.

Just to top it off I think I have office 2000 Premium with word, access, excel
etc..and a different perhaps standard version for office 2000 which i suspect
is the publisher install.

How do I recover these I also tried Winkeyfinder one of my favorites as of
late, but that appears to hang and say wrong version...you what??..

Thanks to all who took the time to read this and a bow down and grovel to
those with a solution.

P.S
Is the files and settings transfer wizard able to copy across outlook, word
settings and lists..like auto-correct & mail, address's etc?

The Office 2000 key is not stored on the computer. I'm not aware of any key
finder that can help with this version.

You might be able to get replacement keys from MS at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=823570

Thanks for the heads up, unfortunately there are several units in different areas, some of these arent going to be upgraded and no account has been made of which unit already has which MS Office 2000 version and cd-key - thanks to former I.T.

The last thing i want to do is install the same app using the same cd-key on
different units..very..very bad - not an option. As we have approx 100 P.c's

This is why i need to be able to identify the current key on the box which
is being replaced, then i can de-install office on the old box and reinstall
it using the recovered key - On the replacement unit.

Thank you very much for your solution / support macropod, unfortunately not
the solution i'm after.. i should've been a bit clearer in what i was trying
to achieve.

So far tried produkey, winkeyfider, the latest version of magical jellybean
(as of 17/11/08) all with no success.

Also about to post this on major geeks, so please dont rerespond to this one
and the other thread - i dont want to waste peoples time. When i have found
a solution, there must be one somewhere, I will update both threads to help
others that are seeking a solution to the same querry.

Thanks for your time.

I'm not sure I understand. Why would you need the Office 2000 key if the
machines are going to be upgraded? (Presumably to a newer version of
Office?)

For so many PCs I'd expect your organisation to have a volume license, in which case (AFAIK) only a single key is required - or one
for each license if you've used more than one (though I don't know why you'd do that).

What you're probably after is a utility that enables you to view the current
key, I'm sure a Google search for VIEW OFFICE KEY will turn up
something suitable

Thanks for your time peter, however i had tried this and several other
search strings.

According to others that have replied to this thread the Key isnt stored on
the P.C..a bit unusual for ms products.

Appreciate the effort / info.

Hello macropod

Thanks for your reply.

The business I work for has the following areas to consider.

1) Typing and Transcription for Public clients
2) A Ms office training arm that is completely separate, different network
and volume licence keys - which are all good.
3) Typing contracts for several facets of the local judical system.

The typing area has steady growth with an increase in ongoing contracts and
the office 2000 products purchased second hand, from online auction by former
it, as i have been informed and was purchased adhoc / as required, and
installed before each unit was sent into production, however the I.T at that
time neglected to note on which machine during his time here had which office
2000 installed where. I am not replacing all of these units just some of
these.

This left me in the extremely unenviable position of not knowing which unit
has which lic and without being able to discover this, is causing a some-what
longer than anticipated delay. The units from the typing arm are going to be
formatted and reinstalled with the VLK's for training as the ex typing ones
are faster than several of the 8 to 10 year old units training are using.
Before i can do that i need to know which unit has which office 2000 key, so
i can reinstall it on them replacement units in the typing arm. Basically
different machine using same 2000 office key.

Hence still stuck in this roundabout of cant continue untill i free up the
Typing units, getting the 2000 keys or some how being able to id which unit
has which key installed. If I just install the office hapazardly I run the
extremely poor option of putting the VLK agreement at risk the business
potentially getting band from using ms products, fines, repremands if not
dismissal not to mention just down right unprofessional and wrong. So that
is certanly not an option.

So hence this post, to try and sort it in the appropriate fashion.

Really appreciate the input from yourself and the others that are trtying to
assist with this one, thanks again.

G

Gee38!

To all that have taken the time to help with this a very big thankyou.

As some of you have mentioned the 2000 office Key isnt stored on the P.C, or
as some have suggested its encrypted. If it was i would be surprised if one
of the key finder apps wasnt able to decrypt this. Knowing how over
compensating Windows 2000 was for security -vs- 98 / Me I suspect the same
level of security to be used on the office key, and what better way to stop
it from being illegaly used or stolen than to not store it on the p.c at
all...

I tried up following the suggestions that have been posted, with no success
to date, from the advice although;

I have followed the link in Peters and Vals posts and to cut a long story
short ended up phoning ms support, basically the option submitted by phone
software support was to de-install the office and reinstall it on the
replacement unit.

The only time I would actually be able to discern if the license was correct
was when trying to activate after reinstalling..hmm 7 versions of office
2000, one unit at a time the other 6 units still in use..so your telling me,
I have got to reinstall office anywhere (at least in the first instance) upto
7 times to get an apropriate result. You know how long that could take, how
is one supposed to justify this time to an employer..blame other I.T...

As i see it, my best option at this time given the advice from the ms ph
support, is to wait to after hours, I already do a 10 - 11+ hour day, then
uninstall office 2000 from them all, after this install 7 copies of 2000
Office again and thats it on top of this reconfigure office with all the
specific outlook and usrs word settings hopefully without issue..looks like
someones got a long day.

I'm actually quite dumbfounded and dissapointed that, you cant tell MS the
activation key and get them to some how reverse it back to match to a key??
well whats the activation number really do then? I suppose if the activation
is based off the Cd-key someone given the info could potentiallly reverse
engineer the algorithm for the encrypton.

Anyway this is where i'll leave this thread, for the now, believing that
"assistance is futile", have to deinstall and re-install.

Once again thanks for all whom reponded, and tried to help...I still cant
believe that no-one else hadnt tried this and that there arent half a million
posts on how to recover the key or something that just says it cant be done
full stop. Even if the product is at the end of its lifecycle.

Cheers Gee38! / a.k.a Necro61 at majorgeeks.com - will update the thread
posted there too.

Hi,

In that case, I'd suggest contacting your local Microsft distributor. You might find it doesn't really matter which license key you
use, provided you've got licences for all the PCs concerned.
