Recover document

I have someone that was working on a word document in Word
X. Word unexpectedly quit. She reopened the document and it
had some of her changes. Is there a way to recover a newer
version? Since she has already opened the document does
that eliminate our chances? Any suggestions would be
greatly appreciated!

A bit late for this answer isn't it?

It's not "Opening" the document that eliminates your chances, it's "Closing
Word." Word deletes its temporary files when it closes normally.

Tell her to go to Preferences>Save and enable "Always make backup". That
way, the previous saved version will appear beside the original as "Backup
of..."

You still have to remember to save manually each time you stop to think, but
enabling always make backup means that the most recent successful save is
always available to go back to.

Hope this helps in future.
