recover older word files

Terri

I have a word file that must have come from the previous version of Word. I
am currently using Office 2003 for Students and Teachers. No matter what I
try I can't get anything but gibberish.
1. I tried open and repair
2. I tried recover text from any file.

All I get is this:

Ã6F¶‹Ê<öŽ –7ÜËÕhç)^~s©Çm¾øxó *#¦
û¹G†öÕl&ã; »±• •c…,9ÛwÜâÆï&ÇÔ< EÔ&â€Å W˪é›\Æ+l Ãœgì\
¡F2Âd!õ³…Ñwå©ŽÙS òC $‚,' ‹

Anyone having any ideas as wto what else to try would be greatly apreciated.

The file has no doubt been corrupted by being saved to or opened from a
floppy disk.

This file has always been onmy computer. It was never trasnferred to a
floppy. If anything it was restored from an external hard drive along with
the rest of the file folder items. It was a word document from the start,
and I don't understand how it got corrupted.

On the General tab of Tools | Options, check the box for "Confirm conversion
at Open." Then try to open the file. What file type does Word think it is?
If it's for a *much* older version of Word, it's possible the required
converter isn't installed.

I had already checked that box. This is a file that was created in 2001 on
the previous version of Word. I don't understand why it won't open.
