OneNote does keep some automated backups. Look under Tools | Options |
Backup for the details, and then attempt to open them using File | Open
Backup.

This does not help as I only see options to create a back up, but not to
recover from scheduled backups. Mine is set to automatically backup every
day. I only see
Back Up Changed Files Now
Back Up All Notebooks Now

I did that but the missing Notebooks are not there either. It's odd because
there are Notebooks from six months ago that I haven't touched, but the two
missing ones I work on every day. ???

I haven't done a back up in awhile. My understanding that OneNote is supposed
to do a back up daily. Everything else is there but the two most important
Notebooks. Why didn't a System Restore work?

One can fine-tune the intervals.
Pls see "Tools | Options | Backup".

No idea on what you might have done :-( :-(
Why didn't a System Restore work?

Naturally so:
A "System Restore" per definition does not touch the data-files (such
as notebooks).
It only restores the system (OS and programs) and leaves the users'
files untouched.

Under Vista, however, there is an additional possibility:
If a drive has been included in the list for System Recovery, oe can a
previous state of a directory (folder).:
- In the Explorer select "Properties" from the right-mouse context-menu;
- in the tabbed page "Previous Versions" select a date for a restore if
thus directory.
