recovered files accumulate

Whenever I open Word (OS X Panther), more and more files pop up with
the (recovered) label. These files were saved normally before.
Any help is appreciated!

Sounds like you have a damaged Normal template so every document you cvreate
is ending up with a corruption.

When Word offers you Recovered files, you need to either delete the
recovered file or save it to replace the damaged one. Word will keep
offering it until you do.

Takle care doing this: the 'Saved' file you have on disk CAN be more recent
than the Recovered file. That happens this way:

A) Word saves recovery information every ten minutes (unless you set a
different period)

B) When you press Command + s, Word saves the entire file

C) When you close Word, if it closes normally, it deletes all the recovery
files.

D) If Word crashes before closing normally, it then offers the recovered
files on its next startup.

E) If Word saved an autorecover file at ten past the hour, and you saved
the document at 19 past the hour, your saved copy will be nine minutes
younger than the autorecover file.

The autorecover files are not complete files, they are file fragments, each
one containing one of the changes you have made. Word opens the original,
then applies the fragments to produce the Recovered version. But if the
original is younger than the fragments, saving the Recovered file will take
you back to an earlier version.

You need to look carefully at the offered Recovered file and decide which
one you want to keep. Word will sometimes offer you more than one version
of the same file.

Hope this helps

Thanks, John, for your advice. However, these files pop-up even after
I closed Word the regular way. I have deleted the Normal template
several times, and it still happens. Also, if I dismiss all the
'recovered files', then quit Word and reopen it, no 'recovered' file
pops up...

I am at a loss.

Thanks for any other help!

Sorry, I think I must have misunderstood the problem. Can you provide a
minutely detailed description of what you are doing, please: with the
versions of everything.
