recovered files

I have some Word docs that I recently recovered from a hard drive. Half

of them are fine, but the other half are not. When I attempt to open
them I get a prompt that tells me that I need to install a converter.
After installing the converter, I see a file conversion window. I
choose 'Windows default'but when the doc shows up it looks like this:
