Recovering a lost file

Hi, I just typed a 15 page essay. Sat here for hours. Then the
electricity went out! Ouch. Anyway, when I turned it back on, there's
the file on my desktop, 'essay'...but it's blank. Under it is
'~$essay', but that only has some random crap in it, about 100
characters.
Is there anything I can do to get this essay back?
