Recovering a *.pst file

My boss's pc died. I am attempting to restore his outlook.pst file from a
tape backup.

When I attempt to import it into outlook it tells me it is "not a personal
folder file".



Is it corrupted?

If so, can it be recovered?

I would first ensure that the PST file is not marked Read Only. Check the
properties of the file.

Next, I would run scanpst.exe against the PST file. If it finds errors, run
it again until no further errors are found. Do a simple file/folder search
for scanpst.exe, then double-click it and follow the instructions.

Finally, rather than importing the file to Outlook use File > Open.
