Recovering accidently-deleted text

S

Sandra

I am using Word 97. I finished typing a document (which I
had been saving periodically) and wanted to move the body
of the text to the right. I highlighted the entire body
of the text and pressed tab. Everything disappeared (I
must have hit another key accidently). In my panic, I
accidentally saved the "blank" version over the previously
saved version. Obiously, the "undo" option was no longer
an option. Is there any way to retrieve/recover the text
that had been saved in the previous versions?

As long as the document is still open, Undo is always an option.

Thank you for the reply.
The document was closed. The message box "Do you want to
save the changes?" came up. I pressed "yes" and exited.
(I was in the the panic, brain-turned-off mode!)
The "autosave" option is on, so I'm assuming earlier
versions of the document were saved along the way. Is
there anyway to access these files/recover an earlier
saved version of the document? When I access the
currently saved version of the file now, I just get the
blank page.

Hi Sandra,
Try to be clear! You did NOT hit another Key.
When you pressed 'Tab', you inserted a 'Tab' character, and
replaced ALL the highlighted text with that single 'Tab'.
EVEN AFTER saving, you could have used 'Undo', not
to undo the 'Save', but to undo the replacement(, and then
Save'd again).
Now that you have closed the Document, regretfully
the original is lost.
Should this happen again, by all means Panic! Just don't
TOUCH anything until the Panic is over.
(What you should have done while the text was selected
was to press 'Indent', OR adjusted the Left Margin.)

That's a good saying.
