recovering an overwritten document

When backing up a copy of a document I was working on to my memory stick, I
got it wrong and copied an older version of the same named 2003 MS Word
document on the memory stick to my PC thus overwritting the newest version.

Is there any way I can recover the newer copy the document that was on my PC?

Unfortunately no. Once you confirm the file replacement it is replaced.
