Recovering damaged tif file

I was editing a scanned document using microsoft Office 2002 document imaging (MSODI) when, in the middle of saving the document, the software suffered a fatal error while saving the document with the message that it had encountered an error and needed to shut down. I now cannot view the document from within MSODI; when I try to view it, it says that the "selected file is not a valid microsoft document imaging file. Is there any way to recover the file? I no longer have the documents to rescan them.

I had the same thing happen to me today with another scanned file.

The file from 7/9/2004 does open in paint but, of multiple pages of documents, only a portion of an email was viewable.

The file from today would not open in Paint, due to "Not Bitmap or other supported format". Fortunately, I had made a pdf file of the document before attempting to save the .tif file and crashing Microsoft Office Imaging in the process. I did click 'Yes' on the report-to-Microsoft message box both times.
