Recovering file that hangs word when opening

I have a word document that contains a graphic that was inserted from an EPS file. Last week when working on this file everything worked fine. Today when I try to open this file I get the dialog box that says EPS Import and it hangs Word. Is there a way to open this document without the EPS file loading? Is there a way to save the recover the rest of the document without the graphic? I tried the steps listed to recover a corrupted file but word doesn't seem to recognize this as a corrupted file and attempts to open the file and then proceeds to hang.

Additional Info: I can open other word files without issue. I have also attempted to clean up the preferences as stated in some of the previous posts for file open hanging word. This did not help with the opening of this file.

I think you can try a utility called Advanced Word Repair to repair
your Word document. It works rather well for my corrupt Word

Yes, you can do this, if the file is a .docx. This method won't work on a
..doc.

Simply change the extension of the file to .zip and open the thing as if it
were an Archive (it is!)

Inside you will find a series of folders, one of which will contain the EPS
it doesn't like. Delete it.

Now, zip the whole thing up again and email it to a PC. Open it as a .docx
there and the file will be complete except for the EPS. Save it as a
different file name and it will be fine.

Alternatively, if you have Zip utilities, you can open the Zip file and
remove the resource fork. If you can get the resource fork out of the Zip
file, Mac Word will open it when you change the extension back to .docx.

If the file is a .doc, or the above method is not possible, you can:

1) Start Word

2) Choose Open from the file menu and navigate to the file.

3) At the top of the Open dialog, drop down he "Enable" list and choose
"Recover text from any file".

That will bring the text out of the file, but without any formatting.

Thanks for this info. I will keep this around for future issues. The file was a .doc, so I was able to use the second option here.
