Recovering files Word 2003 / Vista

Has anyone successfully recovered a file that may have been corrupted /
deleted by mistake? There are many softwares advertising the ability.

Have you tried the following?

Used the Open and Repair option in W2003?
Tried opening the doc with WordPad?
Tried the Recover text from any file option?

I've never had the need to use a third party utility, so I am unable to
advise if they are any better than the above options. But that's not to say
they are not better.
