Recovering from Split Screen

While preparing a test procedure containing a summary of test results in an
appendix, I use Split Screen to view the test results and the relevant
procedure in order to insert cross-references. I'm modifying the document in
both views. When I close the Split Screen view by double-clicking the Split
bar, what determines which view of the document is discarded? In practice,
sometimes I'm left in the procedure and sometimes in the test results. I
always have the procedure view above and the results view below. Does anyone
know whether this is a 50:50, or how to force one view to remain?
I'm using Word 2003.

Instead of double-clicking the split bar, drag it to the top or bottom of
the Word window, whichever leaves the desired document visible. As it hits
the top or bottom edge, the split will be removed.

I'm working in 2007, rather than in 2003, but it seems to be working about
the same as you describe. If I double-click on the split bar, it seems to
kind of randomly choose either the top or the bottom. It doesn't seem to
matter which one my cursor is in before the double-click.

However, if instead of double-clicking, I drag the split bar up to the top
or down to the bottom of the screen, I can pick which one view stays open.
When I drag it up, the bottom stays open, and vice versa.
