Recovery Console persists when opening new Word documents

Josh

Hello,

I am troubleshooting this behavior as part of my responsibilities as a help
desk engineer. One of our clients is experiencing odd behavior in Word.
Whenever they open a document, the Recovery Console shows a document that has
been saved by another user. When they attempt to open or save the document,
they are unable to since they do not have permissions for that folder. I
have logged onto the server where Word and this file are located and have
attempted to save the file in another location, cleared its read-only and
archive bits, and even tried deleting the file from the folder where it is
stored. None of this has resolved the behavior. Any help that could be
rendered towards a permenant solution to this would be appreciated. Thanks
in advance!

Hi Josh,

What version of Word and Windows?

Are you saying that when they start Word from the usual Word shortcut that they get the recovery panel or when they open a
specific/new document? If the latter, what are the steps for opening the document?

Are these mapped drives to the same folder structure?

Are these documents or templates (Normal.dot, for example, should not be a shared template) and what are the settings in Word (if
2003 or earlier) in Tools=>Options=>File locations?

Bob,

Thanks for your reply. This is Word 2003 and it's running on Windows Server
2003 SP2. Why everybody logs into the terminal server using RDP, I'm not
entirely sure. It's not a network I set up, more's the pity. :)

When they start Word from the normal shortcut, it starts normally the first
time. When it's started again from the same shortcut, the Recovery Console
appears. This behavior is the same when opening a Word document from the My
Recent Documents list or by going into the shared drive and clicking on the
document specifically.

The documents are hosted mostly on mapped drives, but the document that
continues to reappear is located in the Local Settings folder for one
particular user (specifically in the folder where Outlook attachments are
stored).

The documents, as far as I know, are all using the standard Normal.dot and
the settings in Tools -> Options -> File Locations are as follows:

Documents: [local My Documents folder]
Clipart Pictures: [blank]
User templates: C:\Documents and Settings\[local]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates
Workgroup templates: [blank]
Autorecover Files: C:\Documents and Settings\[local]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word
Tools: C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\OFFICE11
Startup: C:\Documents and Settings\[local]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi

I´m having kind of the same problem with the recovery panel appearing in
word 2003 on Windows 2003 Server using terminal services. Everytime a user
opens a .doc or just starts Word from the start menu the Document Recovery
panel shows "Available files: Normal [Original] Last saved by user". Tried
recovering the document but the recovery panel still appears.

Thank in advance!

Hi GubbenH,

'Normal' would likely be the Normal Template rather than a document and it could be 'stuck' from also being 'saved' by a Word Add-In
or left over temp files.

If prior to starting Word 2003 and using Start=>Run to search and recycle files found with the string
~$*.*;*.tmp
then you may want to try the steps at
http://word.mvps.org/faq/apperror/ProblemsStartingWord.htm

Hi Josh,

Is there perhaps a Normal.dot for the user and also one that is being 'found' through mapping of the drives so that it's ending up
as being 'shared'?

Is it always the same file showing up, or ???

If you turn on the setting in Tools=>Options=>Save for
[x] Make local copy....
does the problem still persist?

What add-ins are being used?

Bob,

Every user profile on the terminal server has their own Normal.dot. They're
all located on the local C: drive of the server.

It is always the same file showing up in the Recovery Console.

Thanks for the suggestion, but selecting the "Make local copy..." option did
not resolve the issue. No global add-ins are being used, just the standard
Normal template.

What next? :)

Are you sure that the users have FULL permissions in the folders where
normal.dot resides as well as the folder where the documents reside. Word
needs to create and delete its own temp folders in both these locations, so
user MUST have full permissions to do everything in those folders.
