recurrent "no proofing" message despite applying fix

³The Spelling and Grammar check is complete, Text set to
(no proofing) was skipped, To find (no proofing) text,
click Edit/Replace, click More, click Format, click
language and choose (no proofing).²

The above message kept returning despite applying the fix
(tools>language>US English and making sure the box that says do not
check is not checked. Intermittently spell check would seem to work,
but start in the middle of the document ignoring several misspelled
words previously & then return a message that the checking is complete.
Going back to tools, I find the "do not check spelling and grammar" is
checked.

There appears to be a corruption somewhere. I have tried tossing
..plists to no avail. Repair permissions shows no problems. Cleaning
out system cache didn't affect the problem.

I am running Office for Mac 2004 Student/Teacher Edition on an ibook
with 640 mb RAM, 40 GB free on the hard drive, using 10.3.9. Any help
would be wonderful.

Did you select all before applying Tools | language>US English? Very
important.

Did you try using the Find and Replace to find text formatted as no
proofing, as Word suggested? What happened?

Does this happen on all documents or just one document?

See #1 here in case something got missed:
