Red dot not saving?

R

It just happened to me again! I made several changes to a spreadsheet and
hit the red dot, expecting the save dialog to appear. No dialog, just the
spreadsheet (and my changes) going away. grrrrrr....

This doesn't appear to be consistent behavior. At times, I get the dialog
box, at other times not. Is anyone else running into this problem?

First, you should always post which version of XL you're using. I'll
assume you're using XL04 with SP1.

I've never had a problem (I close an average of, perhaps 30 workbooks a
day), but then I don't very often click the Close Window button until
after I've saved a workbook. I generally use CMD-s to save, but you can
use the toolbar or menu, instead. I typically save once every minute or
two when I'm working on a design.

Clicking the close button should never launch a save dialog. Instead, if
XL thinks the sheet is in an unsaved condition, you should get a window
sheet asking if you want to save or not. Clicking Save (or typing s)
will bring up the save dialog. Typing "d" will dismiss the sheet without
bringing up the save dialog.

What changes are you making? Do you have any add-ins loaded, or are you
running any macros that would set the workbooks' Saved property to True?
Can you tell if it happens to any workbook, or is it limited to a few?

Thank you for your reply.

I'm using Excel 2004 v.11.1. As for the dialog box, that was a poor choice
of words on my part. I should have said "window sheet." The workbooks I work
with are fairly vanilla, typically 5 to 12 worksheets and no macros. I had
been adding data to a worksheet when I hit the Close Window button. I know:
that's sloppy, and I won't do it again.

I'm still curious about what could cause it to close without saving.

The only thing I can think of would be a macro that set the
Workbook.Saved property to True. I asked other questions that might be
helpful in my last post.
