red x -pictures don't print

Here's my problem:
I scanned a whole bunch of pictures ito publisher 2007 as part of a booklet
I want to convert into a PDF file and then print (or e-mail).
When I convert the document to PDF, the pictures don't show on the pdf -
only an empty black box or the box with a red x in it. They also don't show
in the print preview page.
I think that the problem may be that I scanned the pics at a very high
resolution - 1200, and somehow this is causing a problem.
1. How can I change the resolution of a picture once I have scanned it in a
publisher document?
2. Or make the pictures show up in the pdf document?

and 1200 dpi is waaaayyyy over-kill for print...300 or even 150 is generally
fine.

I am scanning it the images with a (brand-new) Brother MFC 290C scanner. Note
that I CAN print the image when I print directly from publisher.
The problem occures when I try to convert the pub. document into a pdf. Then
the images do not show up or print in the pdf document, or print.
I do have a feeling it is a problem with the resolution. Since I scanned at
a custom setting (1200) maybe the the pdf app. is not picking up the image.
But can I change the image resolutions in publisher without having to scan
all those pictures again?

ok..but can I change the resolution of the scan in publisher after I have
scanned it in a document?- without having to re-scan all the images?

You should be able to resample the images in any image editing program.
www.irfanview.com is free. Get their plug-ins too.

I tried irfanview, and when I tried to open publisher scans it said "cannot
read this file"
I think I will just enter all the scans again at a lower resolution and that
will probably solve the question.

You scanned directly into the Publisher files? That could be causing
your problems right there. You need to scan into image files, then place
the image files in Publisher. You may be able to save the existing
images from Publisher using Right-click > Save As Picture.

I don't know if this matters to OP, but I scanned some docs using my Brother
machine's s/w. That goes fine. BUT I later found that using Acrobat to scan
made much smaller files. Certainly important when I'm emailing (the scanned
images) to someone & I imagine for inserting into Publisher docs as well if
you're planning to send them anywhere.

You'd *not* want to scan to Acrobat pdf and then insert into Publisher doc.

I wouldn't scan directly into publisher.

I'd scan to a .tif file at 1200 if you want, keep in separate folder, then
use IrFanview or any image editor to adjust images prior to using in any
publication (keep copy of original scan). This way you have a hi res
lossless original to work with and make into anything you want to later.
