Redeploying Office 2003 with SP1

H

Harrison Midkiff

Hello:

I am in the process of redeploying my Office 2003 with SP1. When I first
deployed Office 2003 I created a software installation point deployed it via
a GPO. When SP1 came out I rolled the update into my installation point and
then redeployed my GPO. The GPO deployed to users computers and everything
seemed fine. Soon I found that about 30% of the time even though the GPO
deployed to the computer SP1 was not on the computer.

On the machine that still said they were the original version I UNC'ed to
the installation point and ran the msi file for the install. When it
completed SP1 was installed. If I look in the Application log on the server
I can see successful events for the GPO install so I know I am not
experiencing any permissions problems. In a few cases when I did the
redeploy I got a corrupt error so I deleted the existing package and then
created a new one. I don't think this method would cause any problems?

Does anyone know what might be going on here? Is there a better way to
update my clients to Office 2003 SP1?

Hi Harrison,

Thank you for posting.

From your post, my understanding on this issue is: You applied the GPO to
deploy Office 2003 SP1 to your client computers. But SP1 was not on 30% of
the computers. If I'm off base, please feel free to let me know.

Please perform the following steps to resolve this issue:

1. If it is urgent to deploy Office 2003 SP1, I suggest you use the UNC
installation method temporarily.

2. You can test this issue by restarting one of your iffy client computers.

3. Checking Event logs of the client computer that doesn't have Office
2003 SP1 is a good way.

Next, please send the Event Viewer logs to me (e-mail address removed) so
that I can find more information about the error. Please follow these steps:

a. Click Start, click Run, and then type "eventvwr" (without the quotation
marks), click OK.

b. Right-click Application and select Save Log File As.

c. Save it Application.evt.

d. Repeat step 1 to 3 to save the Security and System event to Security.evt
and System.evt.

e. Send them to me.

4. Use gpresult on your server to check if the policy is applied to the
computer.

Command: gpresult /s

NOTE: For different Windows Version, this command is different. Below is a
KB article to description about this command in Windows 2000. If you can¡¯t
get help from this article, can you inform me the version of your Operation
System.

| Hello:
|
| I am in the process of redeploying my Office 2003 with SP1. When I first
| deployed Office 2003 I created a software installation point deployed it
via
| a GPO. When SP1 came out I rolled the update into my installation point
and
| then redeployed my GPO. The GPO deployed to users computers and
everything
| seemed fine. Soon I found that about 30% of the time even though the GPO
| deployed to the computer SP1 was not on the computer.
|
| On the machine that still said they were the original version I UNC'ed to
| the installation point and ran the msi file for the install. When it
| completed SP1 was installed. If I look in the Application log on the
server
|
