reducing .pst file size

Hi,
i recently upgraded to the 2003 version of office and i cant open my old
e-mails/contacts as outlook tells me the .pst file size is too big and needs
reducing.

How can i reduce the file size without opening it first to delete/compact?

Any help/thoughts greatly received.
