reducing word file size when inserting jpeg

When inserting a .jpeg file into a word document the file size of the
document increases dramatically. I have tried paste special which reduces
the size of PowerPoint files to no avail. Any ideas on how to decrease the
word file size when inserting a jpeg?

How are you inserting it? If you are doing "Copy" and "Paste", this can
lead to file bloating. You need to do "Insert", "Picture", "From File",
then browse to the folder where this file exists and select it.

Other things you can do to minimize file size bloat is to turn off "Allow
Fast saves" under "Tools", "Options", "Save" TAB.

Thanks for the reply. I've tried everything I can think of. I've done the
cut and past, I've inserted from file, and used past special. Certainly
inserting from file seems to be the best method but when creating reports and
such I find that 2-3 pictures can blow the file size out up to ten fold.

I am using Office 2000 so fast save is not a default and I have also checked
that option.

I think my best option may well be just to .pdf the file for emailing etc
but it still creates a problem of excessive file sizes, thus reducing storage
space on the server.
