REF field generating: "Error! Main Document Only"

I have REF field in the header that refers to a bookmark on the 1st document
page. The reference always worked fine before but now it is generating an
"Error! Main Document Only" message.

Anyone have any idea why? I can delete it & create a new REF field but I'm
trying to determine what could have caused it so we can avoid it in the
future.

Nope ... just a document with some bookmarks & some ref fields. It only
happened with this one REF field , not the others ... and only to the first
ref to that bookmark in the 1st page header (the others appear correctly both
in other section headers & the main doc).

I'm starting to think the doc may be corrupt because other weird things are
happening (even after I remove & re-enter the problem reference) ... when
posted to Sharepoint, I can't open it; can't run a compare between it and its
previous version (generates a "cannot compare" message).

Should I consider this to be corruption? If so ... what would be the best
way to remove fix it?

If your version offers it, use Open and Repair (click the arrow beside Open
in the Open dialog to find it). If not, or if that doesn't help, see

My version does offer Open and Repair & that seems to have solved the
