Well, there's a Unicode script in the OS 9.1 Language Pack
It's pretend Unicode as far as Word is concerned. Word pre-2004 can't do
real Unicode - glyphs for which no approximate "Mac international style"
character is available (thousands of Chinese characters, Thai, Greek with
accents, etc. fall into this "no Mac international style character
available"). I don't know which, if any, Mac OS 9 apps would behave
differently. AFAIK, it's just a Unicode encoding for the characters for
which "Mac international style" characters _are_available. The situation is
very different in OS X, especially 10.2 and 10.3, for which there are many
apps, other than Word, which do true Unicode (e.g. TextEdit), built into the
OS. But it wasn't in the OS early enough (i.e. pre 10.1) when Word X was
being developed. Unicode will be in Word 2004.
