Refer to list item

I have created a list of steps that are numbered using the word Numbering
button and i am trying to refer to one of the steps in the text, but I am
unsure of how to get Word to automatically update the number in case the
ordering numbers change (due to inserting or removal of prior steps). Can
anyone tell me how to automate this? TIA
