Reference in a Formula

I can't seem to return a cell's contents as the reference
in a formula. For example A1 has the value B2:B11 and
this is the range(reference) I want to use in a Sum or
Count function in cell D1.

I have tried Cell("contents",A1) but this doesn't seem to
work.

Any suggestions?
