Hi!
I am not the previous one who post this question.
But I have a similar problem with the person.

I just use what you suggest.
But the problem is when I click on the link, it goes back
to the point where a footnote number is inserted, instead
of the explanation part of the footnote.

Eg:
According to XX theory ^1 [a], we need to...
.........................................
.........................................
XX theory ^1 also suggest...............
.........................................

------------------
1 [c] XX theory means...

*[?]
For convenient communication, I name different situation
as [a], , [c].

Problem:
When I click on (which is inserted by cross
reference), it goes back to the [a].

I want it to go to [c]!!!
How to do?

PS: I can use bookmarks to mark the place, and then type
in the number manually, and finally make a link to [c].
But the problem is it won't update with the footnote no
is changed.

Keep in mind that Word is primarily designed to produce documents to be
printed out. Hyperlinks within the documents were originally intended to be
for the convenience of the creator, not the reader.

If you bookmark the footnote, however, you can insert a hyperlink over the
cross-reference to go to that footnote. It would be a good idea to make sure
that the cross-reference is not created as a hyperlink to begin with.
Interestingly, even though the cross-reference will now be displayed as a
HYPERLINK field rather than NOTEREF, it will still update if the footnote
number changes.

So you are lucky enough.
It is not true in my case.

When we insert a footnote before [c], not only the number
made (by cross-reference, bookmarked & hyperlinked) does
not update itself, the hyperlink becomes wrong.

Eg:
** Before adding a footnote **
According to XX theory ^1 [a], we need to...
..........................................
..........................................
XX theory ^1 also suggest...............
..........................................

------------------
1 [c] XX theory means...

*[?]

You bookmarked the number 1 at [c].
And at you make a hyperlink to [c].

** After adding a footnote **
According to^1 XX theory ^2 [a], we need to...
..........................................
..........................................
XX theory ^1 also suggest...............
..........................................

------------------
1 [z] According to means...
2 [c] XX theory means...

Problem:
1. In , ^1 doesn't change to ^2
2. In , when I click to it, it goes to [z] (NOT [c])
[PS: Problem 2 can be sloved if you do not bookmark the
footnote number, but its sentence (eg the first letter of
the sentence]

I inserted a bookmark in the space between the footnote reference and the
beginning of the footnote text, in case that's helpful. IIRC, the
cross-reference number still updated automatically (after being
hyperlinked), and the hyperlink still worked.

Hi!
I sent you 2 replies (1 for text reply; 1 for file
attachment). Check to see if you get it.

Inside the replies, I attached a file which will not
update automatically (comments are included in the
document, so make sure you change the setting to make
comments viewable).

I see the difference between ours. When the mouse pointer
is pointed to the "cross-reference-made" footnote, it
will change into the following in different docs:
My doc: finger
Your doc: note (with a pen beside)

You need to tell me exactly what you did in minute
details.

Many thanks.
