References within a Project

I am trying to put together a PowerPoint Presentation
front end with some excel back end (for calculations),
but am presently unable to reference both programs from
within the References box (which should be able to put
them both into the same project, as it can with two excel
files).

I want to be able to call on certain procedures in
PowerPoint from Excel and Vice Versa (Helps with
automation switching between the two applications)

I though I would be able to Browse and just use the Tools-
-> References dialog box and point to the PowerPoint file
but the Excel says this "Can't add reference to a
specific file."

Any suggestions or ideas would be very helpful
