Referencing a numbered bullet

I'm writing a legal document, which uses the outlining
feature. As I make reference to a specific paragraph in
the body of the doc, is there a way to automatically
update that reference when a new outline item is added?

If you have used a cross-reference, it will update, but not automatically.
You need to print or Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F9 to update these fields.
