referencing a table

How would I do this - I have a large document (124 pages,
8MB file) that contains info such as medical procedures,
and throughout the paragraphs, I somehow need to reference
the doctors involved. Somewhere else in the document, I
want to place a table or a numbered list with all the
doctors names. I need to link this together. For
instance, after a paragraph, I want to put (12), (18) -
which refers to doctors 12 and 18 from the list. I also
want this 'linked' back to the chart. But to make this
more complicated, my list of doctors is alphabetical. If I
add a name somewhere in the middle, I'll need the list to
renumber, and the references throughout the document to
update as well. Any ideas on how to set this up ? I
thought of just entering all the doctors as Endnotes, but
I couldn't figure out how to rearrage the order if more
doctors were added, to keep the list alphabetical.

Please help... using Word 2000, SP2.

Easy as pie! Create an ordinary numbered list of the doctors' names at the
end of the document. In the document, use Insert | Cross-reference to insert
a cross-reference to "Paragraph number" of "Numbered item." The numbers in
the list will update automatically as you add/remove doctors from the list,
and the cross-references will also update (though not necessarily
automatically; you may have to Ctrl+A, Ctrl+F9 or print to update them).
