Referencing a worksheet name in a formula

I've got data spread across a lot of worksheets, but in the same
format. I'm trying to summarize that data on a single page, and would
like to be able to have a formula that references a cell that contains
the name of the sheet that I want to pull data from, i.e. Cell A1
contains the name of the sheet that the data is located on, and use A1
in a formula to point to the correct sheet.

I can't seem to do that. Using just the cell reference followed by !
is trying to open up a new workbook. What's the correct format for
doing this?
