Referential integrity within word (Text Variables?)

Is there a way within word to tag a phrase such that all instances of
the phrase will be changed at once if one changes?

E.g.

"Fred is valuable to company X. We love Fred. Go Sally!"

Change one copy of 'Fred' to '_Sally Hemmings_', now text should read:

"_Sally Hemmings_ is valuable to company X. We love _Sally Hemmings_.
Go _Sally Hemmings_!"

Obviously one can do a find and replace whenever making a change, but
I would like the changes to be propagated automatically to all other
names. Basically, I want multiple instances of one variable
throughout the document. Cross-references should do what I want, but
they don't seem to link to arbitrary text blocks.

Place a bookmark around the "master copy" of the text, then add
REF[erence] fields wherever you want it to appear, something like
this:
Fred is valuable to company X. We love Fred.
Go Sally!

Select the first word Fred, then
Menu: Insert > Bookmark
Type a "bookmark name", say "MVP1"
Click [OK].

Then, wherever you want this text to appear, add a REF field
code, as in
Fred is valuable to company X. We love {REF MVP1}.
Go Sally!

(I'm using curly-braces here to show the field code delimiters).
Either type in the "REF MVP1" bit, select it and press Ctrl-F9, or
work your way through the Insert > Field menu.

Beware /overtyping/ your "master copy" - the bookmark can be
a little /fragile/ ...
