Referring to an item in a numbered list

In a numbered list, I have to refer back to a previous item...for example:
item 12 contains a phrase that reads "see item #3". I created the number in
the "see item #..." phrase by inserting a cross-reference to item 3.
However, if I insert a new item near the top of the list, so that number 3
is now number 4, my cross-reference still points to number 3. In other
words, the cross-reference appears to be to the item number, rather than the
item contents.

I'd like to create a link (or reference), or whatever to item #3 so that, if
I insert a new item between #1 & #2, the reference will be updated with the
new item number.

How would I do this?

Cross-references don't update automatically, but if you print or print
preview (provided you have "Update field codes" checked on the Print tab of
Tools | Options) or select the cross-reference (or the whole document) and
press F9 to update fields, the cross-reference should be correct.

That works...thanks.
