Referring to figure number only, not including the word "Figure"

I inserted figure captions in order to caption the figure. Now I want
to refer to the numbers only (1, 2, 3, etc.). I don't want to refer
to "Figure 1", "Figure2", etc.. This doesn't seem to be an option in
cross-referencing figure captions. It is an option for numbered
items, but the figure captions don't show up under numbered items. Is
there a simple way to achieve this?

You may or may not consider this simple, but I've been using Word for a
long time, starting before a lot of the current features were implemented,
and I have a habit of cross-referencing using old-fashioned features.

In each caption, I use a field for the number, using
Insert > Field > Seq
Then I bookmark just the field.

For the references, I use
Insert > Field > Ref
And refer to the bookmark name.

The fields can be copied and pasted, and they can be edited once you right-
click "Toggle Field Codes."

Hmm. I'll have to read up on fields and bookmarks. Thanks.
