referring to shape text

How would one go about referring to the text content of a shape, in a custom
field formula. I have tried Shape.1!text and some other variants, but can't
make it work. Thanks for any help.

Have you tried Sheet.1!TheText?

TheText represents the text for the shape.

Unfortunately, I only have Visio 5.0, the pre-microsoft version, and
neither of these seem to work. I guess it's time to upgrade.
