reformatted hard drive-lost office xp

I recently reformatted the hard drive on my compac presario running win xp.
I had all the discs that came with computer. Unfortunately, after I
finished, office xp was not on my computer as it was not on any of the
recovery discs. I emailed hp and was told that office would have been a
trial copy and they don't include that on recovery discs. I tried searching
on microsoft, and from what I can tell it looks like they say that the trial
version could only be activated for a set amount of time and if you wanted to
keep it you would have to uninstall the trial version and install a full
version with license. Problem is, this computer was purchased by my wife for
her student at the time and I don't have any copy of office. To be honest, I
don't think this is correct because if you had to purchase the copy, the
student would have submitted the bill to my wife, and she never did. So what
is going on? how can I get back office xp? Microsoft should have the info
that this computer had office xp but when I tried to email them it was going
to be $49 for support!

Microsoft maintains no information relating to your purchase of Office
software. If you don't have the disks and no proof of purchase, you are
pretty much without evidence the installation ever existed.

Look at the invoice when you bought it - if a full copy of Office was
included it should list it separately. If it doesn't, then HP are correct
and it was only a trial version.

Correct - usually 60 days

If you don't have a copy, then the only option is to bite the bullet and buy
one.
You might find cheap copies of Office XP on Ebay.....Caveat emptor....

Or you can download Open Office from http://www.openoffice.org/ which is a
free download, will read and write most Office files and can be put on the
machine now.
