I am using powerpoint for some presentations and have
noticed that when I change a slide or move an object (like
a text box) the screen seems to do about 10-15 redraws
before settling down. This gets extremely annoying and
takes up altogether too much time. Is there any way to
stop this "feature?"

I am using a Dell Inspiron 8100 with an nVidia driver.
All other applications seem to operate fine -- just
Powerpoint.

Try changing your hardware acceleration setting. Instrux at

Also make sure it's not one of your background programs. SETI caused a
similar issue for me with some graphs. Go figure. Turned it off and all
was well.
