Refreshing F9 vs. F2

F9 is supposed to refresh the entire workbook and/or cells which you
have selected correct? And F2 is used to edit a cell's value on the
worksheet correct? So why can I hit F9 5 times without a formula value
updating but as soon as I F2 the cell and hit enter, the value
updates? This has puzzled me for some time, anyone know the answer?
Thanks

Ctrl + Alt + F9 calculates all formulas in all open workbooks,

F9 supposedly calculates formulas that have changed since the last
calculation, and formulas dependent on them, in all open workbooks

If Ctrl + Alt + F9 doesn't work then either Excel believes that the data is
text or
the workbook is becoming corrupt

You can replace = with = (under file>replace) to trigger calculations

I guess that explains why Calc sheet doesnt work half the time either.
And I have way too much data to keep recalcing the entire workbook
every time. The replace all trick is clever, I will put it to good
use. Thanks very much for your help.
