Registration didn't transfer to new computer

I'm asking this on behalf of a client.

After setting up her new iMac from a Time Machine backup (we couldn't do a direct machine to machine transfer), she has lost the ability to use Office 2004. She doesn't seem to have her original install discs for Office.

Is there a way to retrieve the serial numbers from her old computer? I still have access to it.
If she registered with Microsoft (which I assume she did) is there a way to get the serials from them?
She really needs this stuff to work again, and soon.

Does anyone have a solution? Thanks for your help.

This page explains where the OfficePID file is located. You should be
able to transfer from one computer to another.

Forget registration. Information that associates an owner to a serial
number is not saved by Microsoft. Registration only puts you on a
mailing list.

Hope this helps!

Exactly what issues is she having? I'm not familiar with a Time Machine
restore, but I do know I see problems reported by users being confused and
not getting the results they expect.

A copy over should have gotten the info.

/Applications/Microsoft Office 2004 (or X)/Office/
- OfficePID (normally an invisible file)

Users/[Username]/Library/Preferences/Microsoft
- Carbon Registration Database
- Office Registration Cache
- Microsoft Office Settings

"Registration" has nothing to do with the operation of the software - unlike
the Activation required for MS Windows software. It's little more than a
marketing tool. It will put you on a Microsoft email list.

If she doesn't need Exchange support, she can get Office 2008 very
reasonably. $117.99

If she had registered, she might be able to get a replacement cd from
Microsoft but it would be for a fee plus shipping and it wouldn't be timely.
I'm not sure they are even burning copies of Office 2004 anymore.
