Registry Permissions for installing updates

I downoaded th sp-1a update, but when I went to install it I was told that I
don't have sufficint permission for certain registry keys (hkey_local
machine_software classes\giffile\shell\open\ddeexec.....I followed the
instructions for giving permission, and it still will not let me install the
updates. I am the ONLY person ever to use this computer, so what gives?
