registry restrictions

I currently use Word2003. I'm trying to open a Word document created in an
older version; however, I receive an error message saying I can't open it due
to registry restrictions, or words to that effect.

I'm trying to edit the registry using Method 2, but can't 'drill down' far
enough. Method 2 instructions are to go to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\11.0 Word\Security\FileOpenBlock
I get down to the Word sub directory, but thre is no Security sub directory.

Method 2 also says to go to
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Office\11.0\Word\Security\FileOpenBlock
I get to the Microsoft sub directory, but there is no Office subdirectory.

So, what do I do now?

Thanks for any help.

Are you looking at KB article 938810
(http://support.microsoft.com:80/kb/938810)? If so, I think you'll find that
using the downloadable update (Method 1) is by far the best solution. What
you describe as Method 2 is now Method 3, so perhaps you're looking at an
old version of the article?

Thanks for such a quick and expert reply. Your suggestion was right on
targret, and, yes, I was looking at an older version of the Article.

One of the complaints we MVPs had about the original version of the article
was that it didn't make clear that some of the keys had to be created before
you could set values for them, and creating Registry keys is pretty much
beyond the reach of most ordinary users (including me). I'm proud to say
that the MS Office team responded really quickly on this and made the
downloadable Registry updates available (though an MVP had already done
something similar on her Web site) and had the article completely rewritten
(a couple of times, actually) to be clearer.
